A few quick hits
Yesterday, while waiting in the hallway for Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey’s media avail to start, I saw members of the freshman class strolling the hallways. There are a lot of new faces on the hill. Every year, you wonder whether any of the newbies are going to make headlines with either legislation or controversy. Two years ago, Rep. Andy Holt made waves by trying to pass a guns on campus bill. Rep. Julia Hurley made waves by doing an interview with Hooters magazine. She continued to make headlines for nonlegislative issues (desk etching, dog swimming, trooper arguing, etc.) throughout that year and the next year as well. However, most of the new kids are content to sit back and learn the ropes the first two years. I know that’s what most of the veteran lawmakers would prefer.
Also in legislative news today, the Senate Democrats have elected the leaders for their much smaller caucus. Sen. Jim Kyle and Sen. Lowe Finney will continue to lead the Democrats. This really should come as a surprise to no one.
